The Permanent Scan Checklist: Printing QR Codes for Decades
A permanent QR code is only permanent if it scans. Printing requires precision.
1. Contrast is King
Cameras see contrast before they see color. The safest bet is black modules on a white background.

Avoid "inverted" codes (white on dark) unless you have high-quality lighting. Many budget smartphones struggle to invert the bitstream correctly in the shadow.
2. The "Quiet Zone" Rule
Every QR code needs a border of empty space (the quiet zone) that is at least 4 modules thick. If your design bleeds into the code, it will fail.
3. Resolution & Vectors
Never use a low-res PNG for professional printing.

For any physical signage or industrial marking, only use SVG or PDF vector formats. These will remain crisp at any size, ensuring your scan sensors have clean edges to read.
4. Materials Matter
- Reflective Metal: Use matte finishes to avoid 'glare clusters' that block the camera.
- Textured Paper: Ensure the modules are large enough that the paper grain doesn't break the pattern.
- Glass: Be aware of the background visibility. A white backing is usually required.
