Age Restriction Gate
Learn how to add an age verification prompt to your QR code so that only users who confirm they meet the minimum age requirement can access your destination.
What Is the Age Restriction Gate?
The Age Restriction Gate is an advanced setting that displays a confirmation prompt before a scanner is allowed to reach your QR code destination. When enabled, users who scan your QR code will see a full-screen interstitial asking them to confirm they are at or above the minimum age you have set. Only after tapping the confirmation button will they be redirected to your content.
This feature is designed for brands and publishers who distribute content or products intended for adult audiences, giving you a lightweight way to signal age-gating at the point of scan.
How to Enable Age Restriction
- Open My QR Codes and select the code you want to restrict.
- Click Edit to open the QR code editor.
- Navigate to the Advanced Settings tab.
- Locate the Age Restriction toggle and switch it on.
- Enter the minimum age required to access your content (e.g., 18 or 21).
- Optionally customize the prompt message shown to the scanner.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
Setting the Minimum Age
You can set any whole number as the minimum age. Common thresholds include:
- 18 — Standard threshold for alcohol, tobacco, and adult content in most countries.
- 21 — Required minimum age for alcohol in the United States.
- 16 — Used in some markets for certain regulated products.
The minimum age number is displayed prominently on the verification prompt so scanners understand exactly what is being asked before they confirm.
How Scanners Experience the Age Gate
When a user scans a QR code with age restriction enabled, the flow looks like this:
- The scanner's device opens the age verification prompt in their browser.
- The prompt displays your minimum age requirement and a short message.
- The user taps I confirm I am [age] or older to proceed.
- If they confirm, they are immediately redirected to the QR code destination.
- If they close the prompt or navigate away, they do not reach the destination.
There is no "deny" button — users who do not meet the age requirement are expected to simply close the page rather than confirming.
Common Use Cases
- Alcohol and beverages — QR codes on bottles, menus, or promotional materials linking to tasting notes, cocktail recipes, or purchase pages.
- Gambling and gaming — Promotional codes and campaign landing pages for regulated gaming operators.
- Adult content — Creative or editorial content restricted to adult audiences.
- Tobacco and vaping products — Product information and store locators for regulated tobacco brands.
- Pharmaceutical products — Information pages for medications intended for adults only.
Limitations and Legal Notice
The Age Restriction Gate is a soft verification tool. It relies on the user self-declaring their age by tapping a button — it does not verify government-issued ID, date of birth, or any other identity document. It is not a substitute for legally mandated age verification systems required in some jurisdictions.
If your business operates in a sector with strict regulatory requirements around age verification (such as online alcohol retail, gambling platforms, or adult content in certain countries), you should consult qualified legal counsel and implement appropriate legal compliance solutions alongside this feature. Lifetime QR Codes makes no warranty that use of this feature satisfies any specific legal obligation.
